[:en]A mother of three quit a prestigious job to boldly chase after her dreams. Though this venture required a certain degree of fearlessness, the jewelry under Raganna brand gained great popularity among the Lithuanian, French, Norwegian and Cypriot women less than a year later.

“Each and every one of us is a witch – a woman who can see with her heart and her senses. My biggest wish was to create a brand to reflect exactly this. I can already see that I am on the right path which will help other women to discover themselves. Now, the word ‘witch’ sounds much like a compliment to me,” – said Vaida Jutkonė, resident of Klaipėda City and the mind and soul behind Raganna brand.

Business idea born overnight

For almost 20 years, Vaida has worked as a journalist. She said, “I grew tired of journalism, feeling much like I have outgrown it. I desired freedom to devote myself to creating. And then, a moment came when I realized that I no longer wanted to follow the dreams of other energetic people. It was time to go after my own dreams. I am a creative person and I specialize in stage play directing. In the end, this was a natural comeback to myself. I wished to find an area which I was interested in and which gave my life joy.”

Having discovered what she wanted, Vaida started searching for the best way to achieve her goals. She found exactly what she needed in Women Who Run with Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

“I have heard a number of stories, each of them different, of how this book has changed the lives of many a woman. It has been called a bible for women for a reason, after all. As I closed the last page of this book, I realized it was time to do something. I knew I wanted to develop a brand which would unite all women into a single community and would allow them to rediscover themselves anew. Future profit was a secondary goal to me. Of course, nowadays, a woman can attend a variety of seminars spreading wisdom about true femininity, e. g. that a true woman always wears a skirt and similar mottos that seem amusing to me at best. Let’s not forget that, as a rule, such seminars are often held by men. I believe that a woman should learn of her own nature independently by observing the cycles in nature and her own body and listening to her hunches, moods and inner voice. I wanted to create something more than pieces of jewelry. The end result I wished to see was a brand creating added value, a common trademark uniting us, women, and granting us self- confidence to break free of the stereotypes and to return that which has been lost for ages,” said Vaida.

Vaida admitted that the search for the perfect brand took quite some time and she debated long and hard on the name that could encompass the entire idea, concept and area of business. When recalling how it all came to be, she simply smiled and said, “The name of my brand came to me shrouded in mystery last year. One could say that it simply fluttered in through my window on a full- moon night of July. Back then, I was staying in Biržai Town which is my homeland. As I often jokingly say, this is the place my heart truly belongs to. I spent the brightest years of my childhood in Biržai, which might be the reason why I feel most creative there. I have deep emotional bonds with this town. That special night, however, I saw a silhouette of an untamed woman – a witch, and I realized right away I have found the name I’ve been looking for. Well, in reality, my brand name carries two “n” letters but that only makes it extraordinary and easy to remember”.

The trademark developed by Vaida has already been registered with the European Patent Office. At the moment, she is eagerly waiting for a reply from the State Patent Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania concerning the registration of the trademark logo.

The first step called for courage

After the search for the brand name was over, Vaida Jutkonė went on another lookout, this time for the products to carry the brand name. “I was on the lookout for designers, young girls and women who enjoyed creating things by own hands and putting heart and soul into their crafts. Somehow, I simply knew that this brand was going to be dedicated exclusively to women. Leather bracelets with a clearly visible Raganna inscription was the very first product we offered. I was too shy to advertise my brand for a long time. I was afraid to be laughed at and be misunderstood. However, quite on the contrary, the bracelets became popular surprisingly quickly after we started offering them to our customers. That was the moment I knew I was on the right track. Lithuanians once had a goddess of forests known by the name of Ragainė. When you come to think, being called a witch had never been an insult before Christianity found its way to Europe by way of steel and blood. It was the religion and nothing else that reshaped the minds of people and the way we see those who have inborn intuition and can interpret the secrets of nature. But such is our past and history. Indeed, every woman is a witch, in the ancient sense of the word, because all of us have a gift of intuition, insight and inner strength. I wish this brand could bring back the true meaning of the word “witch” to help people change their mindsets. Perhaps, this will make at least somebody think, how come so many beautiful, intelligent and courageous women died burning at the stake in the Middle Ages,” recalled Vaida.

Vaida started her own business from Facebook account. In January, the Raganna brand will be celebrating its first birthday, and although relatively young, it already has over 12 thousand followers on Facebook. The Raganna online store has been recently opened, offering women a possibility to shop for Raganna products online. “We are constantly expanding our assortment. After launching the bracelets, I thought we needed more accessories and jewelry to remind women that they are beautiful and intelligent, and that have been gifted with strong energy by nature itself. The Raganna jewelry is a reflection of a lifestyle rather than a fashion. I think most women would agree that sometimes a woman needs to touch a piece of jewelry that is special and precious to her to be reminded how special she truly is. This is the true mission of my brand,” said the creator of Raganna.

That was how mineral stone bracelets and earrings were brought to life. “All the materials we use are natural. The most important thing is that we use no plastic. In addition to felted wool, we also use polished veneer in our earrings, which is impregnated with coconut oil and beeswax. Our natural gemstone bracelets are also very popular, which is no surprise. Those who have come in contact with the world of minerals know the empowering and positive effects of the gemstones,” noted Vaida. “I have received many letters from women who have purchased natural gemstone jewelry. They thank me and tell their stories how mineral rocks have changed their lives. One of such stories came from my client who had tried lottery for years with no success. Strange as it is, as soon as she started wearing a bracelet with gemstones intended to attract wealth and brining luck to gamblers, she got a lucky lottery ticket and won the jackpot.” Vaida Jutkonė is glad that her mineral gemstone bracelets are favored by women of all nationalities and seem to be the most popular products. Some of the bracelets have already reached Paris, Cyprus, Norway and other European countries. “Raganna is a brand that flies on the witch’s broom all over Europe, especially during the Christmas season,” said Vaida with a smile blooming on her lips. Large handbags made of genuine leather and accommodating the entire life of a woman are her newest creation. And sandals are in line in Vaida’s summer plans.

Every second woman is a witch

“Women need a variety of items. I am sure that my brand has a huge potential for future growth and expansion to foreign markets. The need to grow is immense. We are highly motivated and uplifted by our own surroundings, the positive feedback, gratitude of our clients and increasing sales. Raganna was accepted surprisingly well and gained recognition quickly. Women enjoy our jewelry or handbags as presents from their husbands. Lithuanians also purchase our goods as gifts for foreigners who greatly value nature-inspired jewelry. We believe that everything that is sincere and comes from the heart is programmed to receive the warmest welcome. This is why our products are nestled in moss and packed in wooden boxes still carrying the clear scent of a forest. I have created deep bonds with my clients through their feedback which only confirms that I am on the right path,” said Vaida. What came as a surprise, however, was the offer from Amazon.com, one the largest online stores worldwide. They looked Vaida up and offered her cooperation. The Raganna products reached the Shop Spy online store through the same channels. When asked how she saw her brand after five or ten years, Vaida admitted she had not thought that far ahead yet. She spoke of her success and vision humbly, “I will be forever grateful to my husband Skirmantas. He helped this brand to come to existence and it is only thanks to him and his support that we are steadily moving forward. It’s difficult to predict what tomorrow may bring, so I’d rather not tease my luck with five or ten year forecasts. While I have many plans, I am not yet ready to share them. Let them come to fruition slowly but surely, which is exactly how I’ve been doing things so far. To me, feeling needed is the most important thing, and this is how I feel right now. I have been lucky to be gifted with the sense of discovery and unity in less than a year and I can boldly say that every second woman in Lithuania is a witch or at least someone who knows how to enchant and bewitch others.”
